INDIANAPOLIS –The state’s first chief innovation officer has been selected for a position in the Trump administration. Ian Steff has been appointed deputy assistant secretary of commerce for manufacturing. Steff will take on his new role with the U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration June 5.

His responsibilities include overseeing several national initiatives designed to boost American manufacturers’ global competitiveness in over 12 sectors. Steff’s staff will include more than 40. The commerce department says Steff will be part of a team of senior officials driving the president’s plans involving increased U.S. exports of manufactured goods.

Steff has served in leadership positions for the Governor Eric Holcomb administration and for current Vice President Mike Pence when he was Indiana’s governor. He is a former vice president of technology partnerships and global policy for the Semiconductor Industry Association. Steff also previously served as executive board chairman of the U.S. Information Technology Office in Beijing and was a trade staff member for the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee.
