Composites One, the Closed Mold Alliance, along with Magnum Venus Products, and The Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation (IACMI) presented “Flyways to Highways: How Advanced Composites and High Performance Materials Will Get You Where You’re Going” to more than 120 attendees during a two-day, in depth workforce program this November. The free workshop, held in Dayton, Ohio at the University of Dayton Research Institute, offered participants the chance to learn from industry leaders via hourly sessions and keynote presentations.
Kelly Visconti, United States Department of Energy Technology Manager and Advanced Manufacturing Office DOE Representative, welcomed guests on day one with an introduction to IACMI-The Composites Institute and discussed why the Department of Energy supports advanced composites for clean energy manufacturing innovation. Glenn Richardson, Managing Director of Advanced Manufacturing and Aerospace at JobsOhio, a charter member of IACMI-The Composites Institute, spoke on the future of manufacturing and how intelligent software and advanced sensors can create the connectivity needed to develop the future of high-tech, knowledge-based manufacturing. Brian Rice, IACMI’s Director of Compressed Gas Storage Technology and University of Dayton Research Institute’s Division Head, Multi-Scale Composites and Polymers, addressed new Ohio-based projects in pre-forming with involvement from IACMI-The Composites Institute.
On day two, keynote speaker Doug King, Market Development Manager of Composites at DuPont USA spoke on lightweighting solutions using Vizilon™ thermoplastic composites. The continuous-glass fiber-woven, reinforced and consolidated sheet offers a worthy replacement to metal parts in automotive body and structural components.
Additional conference topics included: engineering rapid preforms, molding thermoplastic and commingled fibers, prepregs, mold-making via BAAM (Big Area Additive Manufacturing), repairing advanced composites and high performance materials, high performance thermoset molding, and creation of reusable vacuum bags.
