During the four-day event, IACMI leaders in attendance participated in showcase panel events, spoke with several hundred attendees at the IACMI booth and met with project participants and future IACMI members.
The show kicked off with numerous sessions led by IACMI representatives as well as in person project meetings with partners including Toray and ACMA to discuss technology findings and next phases. Kelly Visconti, technology manager at the Advanced Manufacturing Office at U.S. Department of Energy, led a featured session on composites for clean energy based on the positive feedback from her CAMX 2015 presentation. IACMI Chief Technology Officer, Dr. Uday Vaidya, led four technical session during the show presenting on topics ranging from progressive modeling of discontinuous fibers to vibration evaluation on recycled carbon fiber thermoplastics.
That afternoon, IACMI leaders held a two-hour session for interested parties to learn more about future goals and objectives as well as application areas and opportunities for project involvement. Moderated by IACMI Chief Commercialization Officer, Dale Brosius, the highly attended session included presentations from all five technology areas and concluded with a productive Q&A segment.
The positive momentum continued into day two with the announcement of four new workshops in partnership with Composites One in 2016. The workshops, designed to help participants become more adept in advanced and closed mold processing, will be held at IACMI partner locations. The upcoming 2017 dates and locations include:
- February 23-24 | Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN
- April 18-19 | National Wind Technology Center (NREL), Boulder, CO
- May 16-17 | IACMI Vehicle Scale Up Facility, Detroit, MI
- November 7-8 | Indiana Manufacturing Institute at Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN
IACMI partners were also in the spotlight at the conference. Gregory Haye, General Manager at Local Motors, participated in the CAMX Live! opening panel of innovators and industry leaders. In addition to his highly attended sessions, Soydan Ozcan, Oak Ridge National Laboratory R&D Scientists and contributor to the IACMI Materials and Process Technology Area, was awarded the Materials and Process Innovation Award for 3D Printing of High Temperature Thermoplastic Molds. This award is presented for a material or process that best contributes to efficient manufacturing and product sustainability. View the other award recipients and past winners here.
Valuable face-to-face booth time was used to promote the newly released IACMI CCT study guide in conjunction with ACMA and Roane State Community College. It was also a great opportunity to have meaningful dialogue with show attendees like Rebeka, a CAMX attendee with family history in the composites field and strong enthusiasm for IACMI’s pennyboard display. Rebeka reaffirmed the popularity of the small, plastic skateboard and provided a glimpse into the mind of a high schooler as she highlighted key attributes such as portability and ease of use that made this board so intriguing. “It’s small enough to fit in your backpack, has the perfect amount and placement of grips and the colors are awesome. Great job and Thanks, IACMI!” View Rebeka’s video interview here.
About CAMX
September 29, 2016 (Anaheim, Calif.) CAMX – The Composites and Advanced Materials Expo, in its third year, is growing and expanding. Held in Anaheim, Calif., CAMX is North America’s go-to composites event for products, solutions, networking and advanced industry thinking. The conference unites all aspects of the world’s composites and advanced materials communities.
CAMX, co-produced by the American Composites Manufacturers Association (ACMA) and the Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering (SAMPE) has seen a growth of 18 percent in attendance compared to CAMX 2015 that was held in Dallas, Texas. This year, the show floor and conference sessions draw an impressive national and international crowd. The quantity and quality of new products and technologies introduced at the show was impressive.
