Over 5,000 exhibitors, 190,000 visitors, and 1,500 lectures comprised the 2016 Hannover Messe conference. One of the largest and most notable conferences in the world hosted it’s 70th annual showing last week, naming the United States as this year’s official partner country. Hannover Messe attracted world leaders such as United States President, Barack Obama, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel as exhibitors displayed pioneering technologies and outstanding innovations.

President Obama delivered opening remarks before hitting the exhibit floor to browse booths packed with cutting-edge technological advances spanning across many industries. During his presentation, President Obama honed in on the next generation of manufacturing, calling out the fully 3D printed Shelby Cobra as a great example of American growth and ingenuity.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO) got in on the action during day two as AMO Director, Mark Johnson, took part in the Tech Transfer Gateway2Innovation forum with a lecture and discussion on clean energy manufacturing and the role of the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI). The NNMI booth, which represented all eight innovation institutes, including IACMI, featured the previously mentioned 3D printed Shelby Cobra, developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s (ORNL) Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF) by an largely integrated team. Elected officials, students, and industry leaders all gathered to view the innovative advanced manufacturing technologies displayed by the Cobra.
IACMI CEO, Craig Blue, made the trip to Germany to represent The Composites Institute and it’s progress in American composites manufacturing innovation. Lightweighting of vehicles was the overarching theme of the week, packed with tours of state-of-the-art German automotive manufacturing facilities and research and development institutes.
