IACMI’s Manufacturing Day 2017 Activities

IACMI participated in Manufacturing Day 2017 in several different ways. IACMI partners and members hosted Manufacturing Day events across the

United States, reaching more than 6,000 students, members of industry, and stakeholders for various organizations. IACMI also celebrated MFGDay17 with a ribbon cutting on the IACMI/LIFT manufacturing innovation facility in Detroit, MI. Manufacturing Day at Pellissippi State Community College | Oct.  4 – 6 | Knoxville, TN

Nearly 90 students from Knoxville area high schools, Austin-East and Fulton High Schools, gathered at Pellissippi State Community College as part of the Manufacturing Day celebrations in Knoxville. Visionary Center for Sustainable Communities brought its mobile classrooms to offer hands-on examples of advanced manufacturing technologies and systems, and engineering students from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville guided hands-on STEM events with the high school students. Students and educators had the opportunity to learn about the cutting-edge technologies that are designed to inspire imagination and illuminate career pathways. Click to learn more.

Nashville Mini Maker Faire | Sept. 30 – Oct. 1, 2017


The Wond’ry at Vanderbilt hosted the Nashville Mini Maker Faire, which attracted more than 4,000 visitors. At least 25 percent of the exhibits had Vanderbilt ties and many of them involved students, organizations, and labs from the School of Engineering, which was among the sponsors. One example includes the interactive demonstrations from the Laboratory for Systems Integrity and Reliability (LASIR) to show technologies for monitoring the health of structures, including a test sample and a way to add input force to a structure component. Greater Lafayette Commerce’s Workforce Development’s Manufacturing Week | Oct. 2 – 6, 2017 | Lafayette, IN

1,700 elementary, middle, and high school students engaged in STEM activities throughout the Lafayette, Indiana region. High school students will tour manufacturing facilities, middle school students will engage in a Manufacturing Expo LEAN and supply chain activities at Ivy Tech Community College, and elementary school students will participate in manufacturing workshops at Ivy Tech Community College.

Manufacturing tours included the following participating organizations: Ball Corporation, Caterpillar Inc, Cives Steel Company, Dayton-Phoenix Group, GE Aviation, Girtz Industries, Ivy Tech Community College – School of Technology, KA Components, Kirby Risk Service Center, Liquid Spring, LSC Communications, Ludo Fact, Oscar Winski Company, Regal Power Transmission Solutions, Southwire, Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Swift Fuels, Wabash National Corporation

The Manufacturing Expo included: Ivy Tech Community College; businesses hosting booths include: Cutting Edge Industrial Technologies LLC, Caterpillar Inc, IN-MaC – Purdue University, Ivy Tech Community College, ZF, KA Components, Kirby Risk Corporation, Purdue Polytechnic Institute, Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Vincennes University, and Wabash National Corporation

Manufacturing Workshops included: Ivy Tech Community College; businesses conducting workshops will be Caterpillar Inc, Ivy Tech Community College and Subaru of Indiana Automotive

KraussMaffei Open House | Oct. 4, 2017 | Florence, KY

Krauss Maffei Open House

Krauss Maffei (Florence, KY) October 5. KraussMaffei hosted an open house to mark the U.S. unveiling of the all-electric PX series of KM injection molding machine at KraussMaffei’s Florence, KY new technical center. IACMI members and partners including the University of Kentucky CAER, A. Schulman, Dow, and Roctool participated in the event.  Learn more

Tennessee STEAM Festival | Oct. 17, 2017 | Knoxville, TN

IACMI and the ORNL Traveling Science Fair participated in the Tennessee STEAM Festival in Knoxville, TN on Oct. 17 with The Muse Knoxville.  More than 200 students, as well as teachers and parents learned about composites from IACMI and UTK engineering students, as well as about the research in supercomputing, additive manufacturing, nuclear energy, and much more conducted at ORNL every day.
