Ashland, headquartered in Covington, Kentucky and with operations in Dublin, Ohio is a premier global specialty chemicals company serving customers in a wide range of consumer and industrial markets, including adhesives, architectural coatings, automotive, construction, energy, food and beverage, personal care and pharmaceutical. Ashland has nearly 7,000 passionate, tenacious solvers – from renowned scientists and research chemists, to talented engineers and plant operators – who thrive on developing practical, innovative and elegant solutions to complex problems for customers in more than 100 countries.
The re-focused Ashland has transformed itself over the past decade from Ashland Oil to Ashland, a specialty chemicals company. The Ashland Composites unit uses applied chemistry and its world-class unsaturated polyester resins and vinyl ester resins to solve the toughest challenges for composite fabricators and their customers. In composites, Ashland’s strengths include resin synthesis, formulation expertise, and outstanding tech service support that spans all the major composite fabrication processes.
Ashland is leading an IACMI project with Michelman Inc., Zoltek Corporation, University of Dayton Research Institute, and Michigan State University to identify and develop optimized vinyl ester resin/fiber sizing/carbon fiber combinations that demonstrate quantifiable improvements in the quality and strength of the resin-fiber interface with resins, sizings, and carbon fibers from the project participants. The project will design an integrated supply chain that includes a resin supplier, a sizing supplier, and a carbon fiber producer, all with the scale necessary for widespread adoption of this technology in the automotive industry.
