The Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation (IACMI), a Manufacturing USA institute driven by the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is exhibiting and participating in live demonstrations in partnership with Composites One and the Closed Mold Alliance at CAMX 2017.

This year, IACMI-The Composites Institute will be front and center to showcase the advanced technology in the 9 meter wind blade prototype, newly-created and unveiled at the IACMI members meeting in February. The prototype is a small-scale version of a utility-scale multi-megawatt blade and is a result of collaboration between national laboratories, academic entities, and eleven industry partners. Fabricated and assembled at the National Wind Technology Center (NWTC) in Colorado, IACMI’s Wind Technology Area, the wind blade prototype investigated new materials and processes in manufacturing with potential for commercialization to positively impact production times, manufacturer cost, durability, and energy-efficiency.

The wind blade project has been selected as a finalist for the 2017 CAMX Combined Strength Award, an annual award presented for a composite product using a collaborative approach to solve a problem that significantly impacts composites and advanced materials. Awards will be presented Tuesday, December 12 during the opening general session.

In addition to the wind blade display, IACMI is also participating in the live demonstrations hosted by Composites One and the Closed Mold Alliance to share tips and takeaways in the latest composite processes. Each presentation is focused on a key market segment, giving attendees the opportunity to see what interests them and have live Q&A with technical teams from more than 20 industry and educational partners. Plans for 2018 will be announced at CAMX as IACMI continues to build upon the strong relationship with Composites One and the Closed Mold Alliance.
