Atlanta, Georgia, October 30-November 2, 2023
(October 27. 2023) We are ready for an exciting week of convening, connection, and catalyzing. See the full list of IACMI Members who will be exhibiting at CAMX.
Let’s Talk Project Ideas at CAMX!
IACMI Leaders Seeking Input on Future Technical Projects
IACMI leadership, including Technical Area Directors and Working Group Leaders, are looking to engage with IACMI Consortium members and the composites community, specifically to talk about innovations in composites and how to leverage those in IACMI-DOE technical projects.
“CAMX provides a great environment to exchange ideas with our expanding member base and a diverse group of manufacturers, OEMs, innovators, suppliers and educators,” says IACMI EVP/CCO Dale Brosius. “If you have products or technologies you believe can help IACMI and DOE achieve its goals, we want to talk to you. We can help you become part of an existing project or identify a new project and potential partners. We’re here to help make those connections.”
Project proposals being considered for funding should fall within IACMI’s focused markets of Wind Energy, Electric Vehicles, and Hydrogen Storage or have cross-cutting R&D elements related to Circular Economy and Life Cycle Analysis, Digitalization and Industry 4.0, or Materials and Processes.
Make plans to visit IACMI at Booth E-20 and schedule time to meet with our leadership and Technical Area Directors.
SAMPE Hosting Book Signing Featuring Uday Vaidya
Uday Vaidya: Providing Building Blocks to a Composites Education
On Thursday, Nov. 2, SAMPE is hosting a book signing featuring Uday Vaidya in its booth (BB58) from 9:00-11:00 am ET. The IACMI CTO has a deep and vested interest in engaging students of all ages in STEM fields and advanced composites manufacturing technologies. These goals are embodied through his recent publications, a three-part series for experiential learning of fibers, polymers and composites:
• “Fibers, Plastics & Composites for Elementary School Students”
• “Composites for Middle School Students,” and
• “Advanced Composites for Students, Educators and Hobbyists
A group of Uday’s students from the University of Tennessee will be on hand at the SAMPE booth to conduct some “demos” from the book. A three-part series for experiential learning of fibers, polymers and composites, the books are accompanied by InnoCrate, a set of portable, hands-on teaching tools designed by Uday and IACMI to extend composites education to those who might not typically have the opportunity.
Lattice IsoTruss Structures for Wind Turbine Towers
IACMI’s most recent Resource Pool Project will be on display in booth E-20 a 6-foot-tall lattice IsoTruss demonstration structure for wind turbine towers. The project reinforces that composites show promise in infrastructure applications because of installation savings and corrosion resistance.
Challenge: Apply IsoTruss composite lattice technology to large-scale wind turbine towers
Approach: Optimize the IsoTruss geometry for commercial wind turbine loading and scale; demonstrate the technology with a model display piece
Impact: Wind turbine towers that are easier to install, corrosion-resistant, and have excellent mechanical performance
Convene, Connect, Catalyze: It’s a Puzzle
Rock, paper, scissors! That’s how CEOs Andrew Maxey and Haley Marie Keith, from IACMI members Vartega and MITO Material Solutions, decided a year ago who’s name would appear first on the shared 30×30 booth at #CAMX2023. They kept hearing from a number of people, including IACMI’s CCO Dale Brosius that they should work together; so, before CAMX 2022 was complete, they signed a contract for a shared space.
“I told Andrew that the only way I would do that is if we could use CAMX to launch a new product,” says Haley. “We didn’t know what that would be, but we spent the next year developing Fenix Fiber+, a revolutionary combination of MITO’s hybrid additives and Vartega’s sustainably-sourced carbon fiber. Together they create a composite that can out-perform virgin carbon fiber, which expands the market opportunity for recycled materials. We’re really excited about it.”
Haley adds, “A lot of people think you can’t get high performance when you’re using recycled materials, but our collaboration with Vartega proves that’s not true.” Check it out for yourself how they are stronger together at CAMX Booth S36.
We hope you stop by and see us in E-20!
